The Cedar

Aperfield Road

(Pronounced Aperfield as in 'Grape', not Aperfield as in 'Apple')

There is a popular belief that the cedar tree was planted after having been brought back from the Crusades in the 12th Century by Sir Henry de Apuldrefield, the Lord of the Manor, who, with his son Henry, is recorded as having served under Richard 1 at Acre in 1191. Some experts, however, say that the cedar is unlikely to be much more than 250 years old. The present course of Aperfield Road, constructed in the early 1920's, is to the left of the tree where the corner of Aperfield Court can be seen in the photograph on the left.
