South Street 3

This earlier shot, taken around 1912, shows the shop with the words "The Transvaal" written on the wall. The next cottage along has two signs saying "Dinners" and "Teas". When the bus use to terminate at the Fox and Hounds the drivers use to get a meals here.

The reason the cottages and the bungalow (part of the wall and roof of which can be seen on the far right) was called 'Transvaal' is not known for sure but it could have been named at the time of the Boer War which happening was around this time. It was quite common for houses to be named after events or people. The same is true of 'Coronation Terrace'.
