A popular day out for South Londoners was to cycle the uphill journey to Westerham Hill during the morning and to store their bicycles at one of the places where notices, like the one above the double gate in this photograph, were displayed. After refreshment at one of the tea gardens and a walk in the country along any of the footpaths which converge at this point (at one time called South Street), the return journey in the evening was a pleasant downhill ride.
