The Saltbox
The 'Salt Box' is a name that goes hand in hand with Biggin Hill. It's unusual construction, with it's steeply sloping roof, was a landmark for pilots from 1916 until it's demolition after the Battle of Britain. It was originally two farm cottages and became one of many tea rooms before being taken over by the RAF in 1936. It was the only residential building on the airfield side of the road. This classic photograph shows a Hawker Demon, of 23 Squadron, coming in to land and was taken in 1933. |
