RAF Station Headquarters

The station headquarters and the gable ended hanger in 1940. Note the hole in the roof of the hanger. On the morning of 30th August an officer finished painting camouflage on his car and left it be a tree to dry. Later that day there was an air raid which resulted in the destruction of the tree and the car ending up in the hanger via the roof. You can clearly see the hole in the roof caused by the car in the 1940 photograph. The hanger was subsequently destroyed in a later raid except for parts of the outside wall, a small section remaining today.
