The Grove

There are several stories of murder and death associated with Biggin Hill, few being founded in reliable fact. One concerns a man found hanged on the wooded slope between Sutherland Avenue, at the top of the picture, and The Grove below. The name 'Deadman's Bank' is however derived from Denman's Bottom the old name for the field through which The Grove was constructed.

In the old photograph can be seen two similar 'shacks' to the right of center. These were built by the Bennet brothers from wood, mainly teak, from a disused prisoner of war camp nearby. The white construction next to the shack on the right was where they lived while they built the dwellings. Both buildings, possibly the earliest in the Valley, remain today but the one on the left has been altered beyond recognition.
