Abbott's Bakery

A few more photos of Abbott's Bakery have come to light. This time from Edwina Brown who is a relative of the Abbott family. Edwina writes:

The first photo shows my great grandfather standing outside the front door, and we believe the lady next to
him is my grandmother. At the side of the shop with the dog is my grandfather, Samuel Abbott .

John Nelson also comments on these photos:

The oldest of the Abbotts pictures is a great find showing it as it was in its early days before WW1. I think the man with the horse is probably George Drew who was delivering bread for the firm by horse and cart until after WW2.

Edwina Brown:

The gentleman in the middle photo is also my grandfather in latter years.

John Nelson:

The modern building in the second photo later became Abbotts mini supermarket but it appears from the sign on the side that at this time it was used for that section of Abbotts business which has previously been carried out in the granary alongside the bakehouse at the back. Looking across to the other side of the Main Road you can see Berry-Narbor, a large bungalow which was the home of Sam Abbott's daughter Ivy, who worked in the business, and her husband Arch Chilman who in latter years managed the granary and, in season, sold some superb tomatoes which he grew himself.

John Nelson:

The other one of what was The Haven, with the front fence removed would have been taken in the 1950s with the building on the right being the reception class of Biggin Hill School presided over by Mrs Bradford.
